Business electricity questions, answered
What BillFair is, how the comparison works, and what happens to your bill when you upload it. Still stuck? Email support@billfair.com.au.
- Is BillFair free to use for businesses?
- Comparing plans is completely free — there is no subscription fee or comparison fee. If you switch directly with a retailer on their own site, there is no switching fee either. For selected retailers you can also ask BillFair to handle the switch for you (a managed switch), which carries a $49.99 inc GST fee — held on your card and only captured if the retailer accepts the switch, otherwise it is released and you pay nothing. Separately, BillFair may receive a referral fee from a retailer when a customer switches using the platform; that fee is paid by the retailer, not by you, and is not added to your electricity costs.
- How does BillFair compare plans for my business?
- BillFair reads the usage and rate data from your uploaded electricity bill — or the details you enter manually — and applies that profile to the plans available to your site. Because the comparison is built on your own usage shape and your site's network tariff, it reflects the costs you would actually incur rather than an estimate based on average consumption.
- Do I need to upload a bill, or can I enter my details manually?
- Both work. Uploading a PDF or image of a bill is usually the most accurate route, because the bill states your actual usage, the billing period, your network tariff and any solar feed-in or demand lines. Manual entry is available if you do not have a bill to hand, but the more detail you provide, the more reliable the comparison.
- What happens to my bill after I upload it?
- The document is processed by Anthropic's Claude AI to extract usage and rate data. Your bill is used to run your comparison. We do not store your account number, and we do not share your bill data with retailers without your permission.
- Does switching retailer change who owns the poles and wires?
- No. The distribution network — the poles and wires that physically deliver electricity to your site — stays the same regardless of which retailer you choose. When you switch, the network charges on your bill are passed through by the new retailer at the same rates as before; what changes is the retail component the retailer controls.
- Why does the comparison ask about my network tariff or demand?
- The network tariff determines how your network charges are calculated, and demand — where it applies — is a charge based on how hard your connection is worked at its busiest. If a comparison ignored these, it could rank plans in an order that would not hold for your actual site. Including them keeps the comparison grounded in how you are really billed.
- Is BillFair suitable for residential electricity accounts?
- BillFair is built for Australian businesses. The comparison is designed around business usage profiles, network tariffs and metering arrangements, and results may be inaccurate for residential accounts.
- How accurate are the savings shown?
- Savings are estimates, calculated by applying a retailer's published tariff rates to the usage data you provide and comparing the result with your current annualised spend. Actual outcomes depend on changes in your usage after switching, retailer rate adjustments, differences between your billing period and a calendar year, and any demand, controlled load or solar feed-in components not captured in your bill. Estimates are labelled as estimates throughout the platform.
- What happens after I confirm a switch?
- BillFair sends your transfer request to the incoming retailer and a confirmation email to you. The retailer then contacts you directly to progress the transfer. If you need to cancel before the switch is submitted, contact support@billfair.com.au as soon as possible.
- Does BillFair compare every plan available in Australia?
- BillFair compares plans available in the markets it covers. We do not compare every plan in every distribution zone, and results depend on the accuracy of the data you provide. Where a market or location has limited retail competition — parts of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, for example — the plans available to you will reflect that.
