What this index measures
Each figure is the median of the usage rates advertised by business electricity plans in that state in the latest weekly snapshot. The median is a better headline than an average because one unusually high or low offer should not move it. The national figure is the median across every plan in the snapshot, not an average of the state figures, so a small state cannot carry the same weight as New South Wales.
The rates are retail usage rates in cents per kWh. They exclude network charges, which are set by the distribution business and passed through by every retailer, and they do not account for conditional discounts or the shape of a site's load. The week-on-week figure compares the latest snapshot with the one before it. The numbers describe what plans advertise; they are not a record of what customers paid.
The index, the API and the CSV are free to use with attribution to BillFair. The full definitions, exclusions and limitations are in the methodology. The annual-cost figures in a bill comparison use your own usage; the index itself makes no assumption about your site.
